100-Person Paper Online by Irvine Systems
100-Person Paper Online is an online platform designed to support the interdisciplinary research event “100-Person Paper (Gakunai Ryoen Project),” originally conceived by Associate Professor Naoki Miyano of Kyoto University (Center for the Promotion of Interdisciplinary Education and Research).
The concept behind the program is:
“What you are not good at is someone else’s strength — and what you excel at may be someone else’s weakness.”
The system facilitates meaningful academic connections among researchers and promotes the creation of interdisciplinary collaborations across institutions.
It has been widely adopted within academia and continues to support the formation of valuable research partnerships.

2. Voices from the Organizing Team
・ As part of Sophia Open Research Weeks , a university-wide research showcase held every November at Sophia University, we introduced an online edition of Sophia 100 Papers this year, building on last year’s on-site 100 Papers exhibition.
・ The on-site exhibition featured 71 posters , while the online exhibition showcased 48 posters . A total of 115 users registered , and 15 comments were posted. Active discussions took place among participants across different departments, leading to new academic connections.
・ Feedback from online participants included comments such as:
“It was great to be able to explore research happening across the university without being restricted by time or location.”
・ Irvine Systems, Inc. provided highly attentive and flexible support , tailoring the 100 Papers “The Sophia Researcher Matching Project” Online platform to meet Sophia University’s specific requirements . These included adjustments to colors and logos, a proxy input system for URA staff, revisions to terms and conditions, keyword and research field customization, and Japanese–English bilingual display. Their support was invaluable.
In addition, On the final day of the on-campus exhibition, we were pleased to welcome the delegation of the Irvine Systems to the Yotsuya Campus. Their visit, during which they enjoyed the variety of posters, also provided a pleasant opportunity for interaction.

・Registration period: 2019/9/24 – 2019/11/13
・Event period: 2019/11/16 – 2019/12/27
2. Comments from the event organizers
・77 studies/efforts were introduced, and 158 people participated by adding comments and exchanging many messages during the two days when the posters were displayed.
・The total number of messages increased to 463 since the exchange was moved to the Web bulletin board, and 38 requests were received for “I would like to hear more about what you have to say” or “I would like to do something with you,” resulting in 29 meaningful matches.
・ This time, “100 Papers” was held as a part of Science Agora, an open forum for science and society. Science Agora, organized by JST, has been held annually since 2006 and is a forum open to all people who think about the future of society.
・We were able to create an opportunity for quiet exchange not only between “researchers and researchers” but also between various people who are trying to create new values for society.

・Event Period: 2020/8/24 – 2021/3/31
2. Voice of Event Management
・The event led to cross-organizational collaboration, with researchers from Hiroshima University and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) jointly applying for a JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) program.
・In addition, four themes were proposed for the “Common Project,” a collaborative research project between Hiroshima University and Higashihiroshima City conducted by the Town & Gown Office.
・The event introduction website was well designed, and as for the exchange website, a new search function “card list (photos and diagrams)” inspired by Instagram and “research field list” for those who have a specific field they want to see were added, allowing participants to interact with each other from various perspectives.
・Since the event was a “place” where themes were not set in advance, it created exchanges among people who would not normally have contact with each other.
・We would like to plan derivative events in the future to make the event even more exciting.
